Million Dollar Mirrors

To me, mirrors are one of the best ways to decorate walls!  The frame gives color, and it helps to balance light around the room.  It's a win-win!

Bought for less than $10, this mirror is on its third life in orange

This is an old mirror my mom wasn't using. Yes, it's a hand-me-down so it not only looks like a million with a new coat of pale gray paint, it was free! Thanks, Mom...

Approximately 6 x 2.5 feet, this mirror was snatched up for $30. No matter that it was hideous brown and gold. Nothing a $4 can of green paint wouldn't fix. And it's beveled to boot!

My son-in-law doesn't like to hang mirrors on the wall!  What, are you kidding me?  Besides paint, mirrors are the easiest and cheapest way to change the look of a wall without investing in expensive art.  But it DOES involve paint -- what project doesn't?  It takes a bit of patience to find a deal, but with that patience and a $4 can of spray paint, you can transform a disgarded mirror and give it brand-new designer life!  It takes a keen eye to recognize a jewel in the buff.  It might be the ugliest color in the world, but imagine it bright purple, chartreuse, hot pink!  Look for mirrors with ornate or intricate markings, one that new paint will sink into and refresh those details.  Take a new look around your mother or grandmother's house...even she might be willing to part with a gilded mirror from the seventies if she thought it would live another 40 years.  Once you find your mirror:
  • Simply clean it well and make sure it's free of dust
  • Cover the mirror by taping the glass off with newsprint and painter's tape
  • Ready, set, paint!
  • Slow steady, thin layers moving right to left and up and down work best, with a second coat if needed.  Don't let it drip, and happy painting!
